Git Installation

Installation on RHEL

There are different possibilities to install Git on a Linux machine, i.e. compile from source, install a over a package manager etc.

The simplest approach on RHEL is to use the EPEL packages:

  1. configure your system to use the EPEL packages
  2. install Git over your package manager

Example for RHEL 5 i386:

Install the EPEL sources:

 rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-3.noarch.rpm

Install Git using yum:

yum install git

Install from source

  1. Download the git package from http://git.kernel.org
  2. Unpack the archive and cd into it

Installation:

make prefix=/usr/local install install-doc install-html install-info
make install

Configure Git after installation

Configure some global setting after having installed Git:

git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email my_name@mail.com
